1st May - Spurs in History

1st May, 1963

Spurs 3 OFK Belgrade 1 (European Cup Winners Cup Semi Final - 2nd Leg).

Holding a one goal lead from the 1st Leg, Spurs progressed to their first European Final. However, it was a difficult match and Spurs were made to fight all the way. Without Greaves who was suspended, having been sent off in the first game, Spurs took the lead through Mackay. OFK fought back to equalize and put Spurs under considerable pressure. In a tense game, Brown and all of the defenders had to be at their best and it was a relief to everyone when Jones restored Spurs lead before half-time. Smith completed the scoring in the second half to make Spurs the first English club to reach a European final.

Spurs were on their way to Rotterdam to play Atletico Madrid.

1st May, 1920

Birmingham City 0 Spurs 1 (2nd Division)

Champions of the Second Division, promoted at the first attempt after being wrongfully omitted from the enlarged 1st Division, Spurs finished their season with a record 70 points (2 points for a win) - 6 ahead of Huddersfield in second place and 14 in front of Birmingham in third. They won 32 games, 6 draws and only four defeats.

Their final goal of the season was scored by Jimmy Seed.

1st May, 2005

Spurs 5 Aston Villa 1

This time last season, hoping for a UEFA place, Spurs produced one of their best performances of the season. Fredi Kanoute scored twice, his final goals for the club, Stephen Kelly, Ledley King and Andy Reid, his first for Spurs, completed the rout.

Ultimately, it all ended in disappointment as the young team failed to produce the same level of performance against an experienced Middlesborough side the following week and there was to be another year's wait for European football - but it's been worth it.

Memories:

1986 Spurs 2 Inter Milan 1 (Ossie Ardiles Benefit)

Diego Maradona played for Spurs and linked with Glenn Hoddle to give the fans a performance to remember - Mark Falco and Clive Allen scored the goals.

1990 Spurs 2 Northern Ireland XI 1 (Danny Blanchflower Benefit)

(Former Hero, Danny Blanchflower with F.A.Cup)

The game was organised by Spurs to assist their 'Double' winning captain who had fallen on hard times financially - the past and present Spurs met, Blanchflower and Gascoigne, and Gazza entertained everyone with his range of skills.
