Spurs in History - 6th January

Jimmy Greaves
6th January, 1962
Birmingham City 3 Spurs 3 (FA Cup 3rd Round)

This was another difficult tie for the Cup holders against 1st Division opposition, on a pitch that had been covered in snow for much of the previous week.

The ‘Double’ winning team of the previous season had been strengthened by the signing of Jimmy Greaves and the other changes saw Jones replacing Terry Dyson on the left with Terry Medwin playing on the right.  Les Allen was at centre forward with Bobby Smith losing his place for Greaves.

Spurs took a three goal lead by the 32nd minute through Greaves who scored the first and third goals, the second a header, with Cliff Jones scoring the second.  Birmingham, however, fought their way back into the game by scoring a minute later and then equalized with two second half goals.

Spurs won the replay 4 – 2, with goals from Medwin (2), Greaves and Allen.

Team: Brown, Baker, Henry, Blanchflower, Norman, Mackay, Medwin, White, Allen, Greaves, Jones.

The first ever Spurs goal was scored today in Hotspur FC's second match. Unfortunately, the name of the goal scorer is not recorded and further it was in a 1-8 defeat in a friendly against Latymer who were to become the club's main rivals over the next number of years.
